VA Sweeny Sheet Metal begins trading
Established by Val Sweeny in 1910, the early sheet metal business specialised in making coffee urns, bain maries, and other catering equipment. It was later handed down to his grandson Jim.
1972
VA Sweeny Sheet Metal establishes Active Air
When the family business was asked to fabricate some sheet metal duct-work, Jim saw an opportunity to move into the rapidly expanding Air Conditioning construction business and set up Active Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Pty Ltd. He subcontracted sheet metal work to his grandfather’s business, VA Sweeny Sheet Metal.

Nippin Dens Distributorship
Active Air takes on Nippon Denso Distributorship in NSW.
1988
AC Rental Industry in Australia is Born
During a trip to Nippon Denso, Jim is advised to try renting the portable air conditioners, the air conditioning rental business in Australia is born shortly thereafter.
1989
Expansion into VIC
Capitalising on its success in NSW, Active Air opens branch in Melbourne.
1995
Expansion into Events
Active Air expands into the events market.
2003
Expansion into QLD
Capitalising on its success in NSW and VIC, Active Air opens branch in Brisbane.
2008
Expands into Rental Chiller Market
Adding to its already extensive product range, Active Air invests in expanding into the chiller market.
2009
Expansion into WA
Capitalising on its success in the other states, Active Air opens branch in Perth.
2012
Four Generations of Sweeny
Jim’s son Brad becomes Director of Active Air. Capitalising on his success in the event market, Brad leans the business further towards power generation and distribution.

Expansion into Newcastle
Active Air expands its reach by opening a regional office in Newcastle.
2018
Expansion into Canberra
After seeing success in Newcastle, Active Air expands into Canberra.
2020
Pandemic Climate Control
Worked through COVID Pandemic and completed temporary climate control for the Japan Olympics
2023
Expansion into SA
Active Air opened a branch in Adelaide to continue the expansion and reach across Australia.
Today
We have supplied and installed equipment for some of Australia’s largest temporary climate projects and events, including the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Sydney Festival, Brisbane Festival, Australian Open, Supercars, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and many more.
